This weekend, Sydney-based roots rockers Caravãna Sun released their debut album Rising Falling with a rocking gig at Bondi’s notorious Beach Road Hotel.

Inspired by the gypsy culture of southern France to the mystery of Ord River in the Northern Territory, the earthy collective’s music takes the listener on a soul-moving, body-invigorating journey through the world’s cultures. Caravãna Sun’s sound is perhaps best described as a frenetic fusion of roots, surf, ambient and world musical styles.

The band released its first single Feel Better last June. The song was picked up by Sydney’s FBi 94.5FM and the national station Triple J, who gave it significant airplay, with the latter station dubbing the song as ‘magic’.

Further to its recorded output, Caravãna Sun has also earned a reputation for first-class live shows, as much for their bopping reggae grooves and soulful lyrics as for the high-energy the surfing troupe injects into its audiences.

The band is fronted by Luke Carra, a familiar face on the Maltese music scene through his various engaging live performances on the island in recent years.

The singer-songwriter, who has Maltese lineage, has performed at various venues and festivals in several countries, among them Peats Ridge, Sydney Blues and Roots, Bridgetown Blues and Fete de la Musique in France.

The other members of this infectiously rocking-in-a-toe-tapping-kind-of-way combo are bassist Ant Beard, drummer Alex Dumbrell and Dan Moore on trumpet.
