The last time Caravãna Sun’s name graced these music pages was in October 2011, when they’d just released debut album Rising Falling hot on the heels of lead single Feel Better.

A frenetic fusion of gypsy-fuelled ska and surf rock

Picked up by Sydney’s FBi 94.5FM and Australian national station Triple J, the single propelled the band’s profile in the music scene Down Under to new heights. As a result, the band spent the rest of 2011 touring the album – a heavy schedule that took in Australia’s east and west coasts, bringing with it a growing army of fans and new opportunities.

Based in Cronulla, Sydney, and fronted by Luke Carra, who is of Maltese lineage, Caravãna Sun describes its music as a frenetic fusion of gypsy-fuelled ska and surf rock; a self-styled mix they’ve been honing since being formed in 2009.

Last year, the band toured around Europe, exploring the gypsy roots that inspired their debut album, stopping in Switzerland, France, Holland and Spain, and playing at a number of festivals and other venues. Upon its return to Australia, the band took a short break before getting back on the road for a domestic string of live shows leading up to the release of brand new single The Bottle, another riveting slice of upbeat gypsy ska signed, sealed and delivered for general consumption as the band continues to work on its next album.

Hopefully, they’ll stop over in Malta on their next European tour.

Caravãna Sun is Luke Carra (guitar and vocals), Ant Beard (bass), Alex Dumbrell (drums) and Eamon Dilworth (trumpet).
