A thief who tried to steal a police inspector’s car and then threatened him at the police station was yesterday jailed for three years.

Simon Peter Chircop, 46, of Attard, was also fined almost €1,000 after admitting to the attempted theft of the Nissan belonging to police inspector Pierre Micallef Grimaud at St Julian’s at around 5pm on August 20.

Mr Chircop was spotted trying to break into the car by another police officer who immediately arrested him. When he was being interrogated at the St Julian’s police station, he threatened Mr Micallef Grimaud. He also admitted to damaging Mr Micallef Grimaud’s car, threatening him and being in possession of a knife without a police licence.

Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit said Mr Chircop had not learnt anything from the various opportunities he had been given to reform and had not learnt from previous mistakes. She jailed him for three years, fined him €116 for the possession of an unlicensed knife and €800 for threatening the inspector.

Police inspector Trevor Micallef prosecuted.
