A car dealer has been charged with defrauding nine clients when he allegedly took their deposit money to import cars from the UK but never delivered the vehicles.

Duncan Buttigieg, 29, from Għaxaq, appeared before Magistrate Audrey Demicoli and pleaded not guilty to fraud and misappropriation this month and in previous months.

Mr Buttigieg, a director at Direct From UK Car Dealer and of Direct Cars Malta, was also charged with driving a car without a licence and relapsing and was remanded in police custody.

A few weeks ago, Mr Buttigieg was charged with conspiring to set fire to the car of Police Inspector Angelo Gafà, a senior officer in the fraud squad.

Police Inspector Ian Farrugia prosecuted. Lawyers José Herrera and Veroniqué Dalli represented the accused.
