The Malta Canoe Sports Festival and Canoe Polo Open tournament, the second in the series, will be held at Dock One in Cospicua this weekend, the Malta Federation of Canoeing said.

The launching of the two events was held at the Bormla Regatta Club recently and attended by various guests including Parliamentary Secretary for Sport Chris Agius.

Federation president Chris Camilleri explained how the Polo Open is gathering momentum with more foreign teams taking part in the tournament.

“While canoe polo has been practised locally for various years, it was after last year’s Canoe Sports Festival that we registered a significant increase of fresh interest which also resulted in the birth of a new club,” he said.

Camilleri also expressed his appreciation at the constant help and support given by the authorities for the organisation of the federation’s activities in Cospicua.

Teams from Catania, Siracusa and Palermo will join the sides from the Malta Canoe and Cospicua Canoe clubs in the competition.

This weekend, those attending the festival will be also treated to a series of racing displays by the Malta Canoe Racing Club. Newcomers who would like to try out the different canoeing disciplines can give it a try on site.

The festival starts on Saturday morning with the first games from the Canoe Polo Open.

Competition runs all day and the highlight of the tournament will be on Sunday when the final is played.
