The Institute of Directors will kickstart the debate about reviewing corporate governance within a eurozone context to shed new light on the system’s strengths and Malta’s role as an international financial centre and business hub.

The debate will take place at an event on January 17, supported by the Malta Financial Services Authority.

It will be moderated by Peter Barrett, who was a board member of leading Hong Kong companies Hutchison Whampoa and Hong Kong Telephone for 15 years. He is a founding council member and honorary council life member of Hong Kong IOD.

“The IOD has been flying the flag for corporate governance in Malta,” said IOD chairman James Satariano. “Financial services have become a cornerstone of our economy, with their contribution to Malta’s GDP approaching 20 per cent, financial services are in the spotlight like never before. The global banking system seems to have been stumbling from one crisis to another for the last five years,” he adds.

Last year the European Commission adopted a green paper and launched a wide-ranging public consultation on the EU corporate governance framework. With Malta’s growing international financial centre, the Maltese islands are not immune to the winds of globalisation.
