The Forum group of trade unions has called on the Government to suspend the controversial residents’ parking scheme introduced by the Sliema council.

In a statement, the group backed comments made by the Malta Union of Teachers about the problems that the scheme has caused teachers in the five schools in the Sliema area.

Forum said the Government should have legislation in place to suspend such an “irrational and irresponsible” decision taken by such a “short-sighted” council.

Half the parking bays across Sliema are being reserved for residents, who have a permit to display on their cars. Non-residents can only park in these spots for two hours between 8am and 9pm.

The scheme prompted a torrent of complaints from residents, shoppers, business owners and their employees.
