Opposition MPs Joe Mizzi and Leo Brincat have asked Speaker Michael Frendo to convene an urgent meeting of the parliamentary committee that is looking into the issue of black dust.

In a letter forwarded to the press, they said they were calling for the meeting in view of the report commissioned by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (Mepa) which indicated the Marsa power station as the likely source of the dust. The report was conducted by University Professor Alfred Vella.

Although the report is dated March 2011, the select committee was not informed of its existence when it discussed the problem in June, the MPs said.

Dr Frendo is the chairman of the committee.
