Malta’s two major trade unions have called on the government to compensate vulnerable groups for the high price of fuel and publish the results of a report that looked into the matter.

The Union Ħaddiema Magħqudin and the General Workers’ Union issued separate statements in which they reminded the government that a report into the impact of the high costs on society’s vulnerable groups should have been ready by the end of May.

The report had been commissioned in April during a meeting of social partners within the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development.

Yesterday, the UĦM said it had written to the chairman of the MCESD, Sonny Portelli, asking for a meeting so the government could provide an assessment of the impact that high fuel prices had on vulnerable groups.

The union insisted these groups be granted compensation for the way their quality of life had deteriorated because of the prices.

Calling the price rises insensitive, the GWU insisted compensation should be given to all classes that were negatively affected by the constant hike in prices.

On Monday, Enemalta announced that the price of unleaded petrol went up by 3c per litre although diesel went down by 4c.
