A motion for a debate in Parliament on the Enemalta-Shanghai Electric deal was presented yesterday by Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi.

The government had wanted to hold the debate in December but it was put off because Opposition leader Simon Busuttil was away on EPP duties.

It was then scheduled to be held yesterday but the Opposition objected saying it had not been formally informed about it and, furthermore, no motion had been filed.

The Nationalist Party is arguing the debate cannot be held before the government publishes all the contracts related to the agreement. “This should not be the course of action for a government that promised to be the most transparent in history,” it said.

Reacting, the Labour Party said the PN was blocking a debate on the biggest foreign investment in Malta.

It said this was an attempt by Dr Busuttil to delay speaking about the deal, which would put Enemalta back on a sound financial footing after piling up over €840 million in debts under a PN administration.

Last night, the government laid on the table of the House the agreement signed between the government, Enemalta and Shanghai Electric on December 12.
