Police arrested 85 people in an early morning operation yesterday to clear anti-Wall Street protesters from a plaza in Oakland, near San Francisco, a spokesman said.

Streets in downtown Oakland were closed down temporarily during the operation involving riot police who cleared the Occupy Oakland protest at Frank Ogawa Plaza, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

“I can confirm that 85 arrests were made,” an Oakland Police Department spokesman said, declining to immediately provide further details.

Protesters were taken away in plastic handcuffs. CBS television reported that officers fired beanbags and tear gas to clear an encampment, including dozens of tents in front of City Hall.

There were no injuries in the raid, carried out around 5 a.m. (1200 GMT), CBS said.
