The dying trade of the few Maltese hawkers who still sell sea salt, capers and kerosene in village cores is captured in the Bank of Valletta 2014 calendar.

Always a showcase of national treasures, the BOV calendar took an interesting twist three years ago when it started taking readers down memory lane.

The team behind the 2014 calendar scoured villages and managed to find a seller of the popular bigilla, a bean paste, still using a donkey-drawn carriage, the man known as tal-kappar who still sells pickled capers and a woman, tal-fjuri, selling flowers from a disused children’s pram.

Another rarity is Mikelanġ Cassar, known as is-sennien, who still goes around villages with his trusty whetstone in the back of his van, sharpening knives and scissors.

The 2011 calendar opened a window on quaint typical outlets and trades that were more common a few decades ago. That was followed by renowned veteran musicians, depicted at Splendid Bar in Strait Street, Valletta, in the 2012 calendar. Last year, the calendar focused on children’s street games, some of which are close to being forgotten.

The photos were taken by award- winning photographer Joe Smith. JP Advertising worked closely in defining the calendar’s concept, design and production.
