A second-half Juninho Cabral penalty goal kept Senglea in contention for promotion along with Lija and Naxxar as Mqabba lost pace.
Much of the action for Senglea was coming from Austin Obaje-Smith down the left flank. On 10 minutes, he shot just wide from a good position.
With the wind behind their backs Senglea attacked again and Pablo Doffo saw his free-kick sailing just over the bar. Cabral’s effort also went just wide soon after.
On resumption, Mqabba came out attacking. Paul Chimieze was foiled by Jurgen Farrugia who at the very last moment cleared for a corner. From the flagkick, Goran Adamovic rose high but his header lacked precision.
Clive Mizzi’s side were unlucky when a Michael Borg free-kick rattled the Senglea crossbar. At the other end, Adamovic brought down Terence Vella inside the box and Cabral sent Jonathan Debono the other way to score what proved to be the winning goal.
Mqabba were unable to react and Senglea almost doubled their lead late on when Cabral released Obaje-Smith but his effort was blocked by the keeper.
