Cabinet meetings will be held on Tuesdays, instead of Mondays, one of several administrative changes being introduced by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat. However, the first official meeting for the 14-member Cabinet will be held today, Wednesday, since yesterday was a public holiday.

Sources close to the Prime Minister said Dr Muscat preferred to keep Mondays free to clear any pending items or other matters that would have cropped up over the weekend and to prepare for the week ahead.

Dr Muscat’s spokesman explained that Cabinet meetings would be held on Tuesdays so that the leg work could be done by the chiefs of staff of each ministry on Monday.

“This is being done so that Cabinet can stick to high-level decision-making and discussions after minor issues are ironed out the day before,” the spokesman said, claiming this would make the process more efficient.

“This is also in line with EU practices,” he added.

The Monday meeting for secretariat heads will be coordinated by the Prime Minister’s chief of staff, Keith Schembri.
