Suzanne Buttigieg grabbed a historic silver medal for Team Malta in GSSE gymnastics after placing second in the individual beam exercise at the Belfair Hall, yesterday.

This was Malta’s first ever gymnastics silver in GSSE as before our gymnasts had only succeeded in winning bronze.

Buttigieg, 13, produced a clean exercise that saw her achieve an excellent score of 12.100. That lifted her to second in the standings.

Luxembourg’s Aline Bernar took gold with 12.600 while Iceland’s Norma Dogg Robertsdottir was third, 12.000.

“I’m lost for words at the moment,” the softly-spoken Buttigieg told The Times of Malta.

“I never dreamed that I could return home with a medal. In the last months, I put in a lot of effort in training with the girls... the long hours in the gym were 100 per cent worth it.”

Peppijna Dalli just missed out on a medal in vault when placing fourth with 12.950 and then classified fifth in the parallel bars with a score of 9.850.

Kirsty Caruana had two eighth placings – in the vault with 12.125 and in the floor with 11.400 points.
