A butcher yesterday admitted to stealing 22 knives from the government abattoir on Monday and a small amount of cash from a vending machine on the same day.

Ġużeppi Farrugia, 59, from Żurrieq, confessed to stealing the butcher’s knives shortly after the police picked him up after receiving a report about the missing items.

He also admitted to stealing €25 from a vending machine situated on the premises.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke put off the case for submissions on punishment. Mr Farrugia was granted bail against a deposit of €200 and a personal guarantee of €1,000.

Police Inspectors Spiridione and Jurgen Vella prosecuted. Lawyer Franco Debono appeared for Mr Farrugia.
