Students at the Ta’ Paris boys secondary school are being placed in danger because they have to cross through traffic to get to their school, the teachers’ union has complained.

The school is situated in a narrow road and buses have to stop the children a block away.

Although the road they have to cross is supposed to be closed to traffic during certain hours, motorists are ignoring the signs and there are no police officers to enforce them, according to the Malta Union of Teachers.

Last week the union wrote to the Education Ministry asking for a police officer to be stationed near the school but, until yesterday, the situation was still the same, union president Kevin Bonello said.

A ministry spokesman was contacted for a reaction but no reply was received by the time of writing.

Meanwhile, on a separate issue, Year 6 teachers in government and Church schools have been instructed by the MUT to revert to last year’s religion syllabus and text books, as they have not yet received the revised syllabus.

“They are put in the situation when they can’t plan their year. The syllabus is being released bit by bit and they don’t have a complete list of books,” said Mr Bonello.
