Nationalist MEP Simon Busuttil has been re-elected to one of the senior posts in the European People’s Party.

He will serve as coordinator of the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee for another two and a half years.

Dr Busuttil was the only one of Malta’s six MEPs to be elected to a Parliament post after party national delegations this week concluded their negotiations behind closed doors to assign MEPs to the different committees.

Dr Busuttil pledged to work hard to continue helping the EPP shape European laws that promoted a citizens’ Europe and a safer Europe. He will also serve in the Budgets Committee as a substitute.

The other Nationalist MEP, David Casa, will again sit on the Employment and Social Affairs Committee and follow the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee as a substitute.

On Labour’s side, delegation head Louis Grech said MEPs would continue to focus on the internal market, the economy and foreign affairs in the remaining two and a half years of this legislature. Mr Grech will again serve as one of the vice-presidents of the influential Internal Market Committee and sit as substitute on the Bud-get Committee.

Edward Scicluna retains his post as vice president of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee and will act as substitute on the Environment Committee.

Foreign relations will continue to dominate John Attard Montalto’s agenda who has been assigned the Committee for International Trade as his main area of focus. He will also act as a substitute on the powerful Foreign Affairs Committee.

Joseph Cuschieri, who became an MEP only last month, will sit on the Transport and Tourism Committee and will be following the EP’s Regional Development Committee as a substitute.

The EP has 24 committees where the main work of an MEP involves the drafting of reports and opinions and proposing amendments to EU legislation.
