Nationalist Party leader Simon Busuttil will announce a major reshuffle in the Opposition’s shadow cabinet over the coming few days, Times of Malta is informed.

The announcement of the coming changes to the PN’s front team was made by Dr Busuttil himself yesterday during the first PN parliamentary group meeting of the new year.

A party source yesterday also confirmed that Dr Busuttil was currently holding seperate meetings with all Nationalist MPs to discuss their future roles for the rest of the legislature.

“Dr Busuttil has decided that the time has come for a major overhaul of the PN’s shadow cabinet.

“This is another major decison being taken by Dr Busuttil in order to introduce changes in the party and make it more effective and credible with the electorate,” the source said.

“He told Nationalist MPs at the meeting that the changes will be radical and will put the shadow cabinet in a much better position to scrutinise the government.”

The reshuffle in the PN’s shadow cabinet will be the first since Dr Busuttil was elected party leader in 2013.

Following the drubbing the PN suffered at the last general election, Dr Busuttil assigned roles to every member of the parliamentary group.

However, the most delicate and important political areas were still assigned to former ministers. Among them were those who had lost popularity with the electorate and were percieved as responsible for certain blunders that occurred in the previous administration.

Dr Busuttil was heavily criticised at the time for prefering the status quo instead of going for a new and younger team.
