Malta’s bus service is in chaos. Here are a few things I have noticed recently:

• The X2, which links Sliema to the airport, and which was available every 30 minutes (and always busy), is now reduced to one an hour. I was recently on the X2 in Sliema and it was unable to pick up passengers up with suitcases.

• There is always a massive traffic jam near the University entrance. I was almost hit by a car when getting off a bus as buses just stop in the middle of the road because of lack of bus stops.

• The timetable for the University stop used to have a bus departing every five or 10 minutes. The new timetable seems to have about six buses departing all art the same time on the half hour; this creating longer traffic jams.

• To make the situation even worse, instead of heading to Marsa as per the old timetable most of these buses detour to St Luke’s Hospital. So picture the scene on the narrow approach to St Luke’s – five buses heading one way, meeting up with three or four going back to the University. Has anyone seen passengers get on or off at St Luke’s? I never have. It is a pointless detour.

• If Transport Malta completely changes a route it would be best to change the route number. There would be less confusion all round.
