Reacting to the article titled ‘No deterring bus lane bravado’ (December 27), the local cycling commuting group, BAG, pointed out that drivers who abuse and illegally use the priority vehicle lanes also put cyclists’ lives at risk.

With few urban cycle lanes, the Bicycle Advocacy Group pointed out that these are often one of the few urban infrastructures that should make cycling easier. Often, the case is completely the opposite.

Not only do people on bicycles have to cope with illegal drivers speeding past queues of stuck traffic, taxis speeding to pick up fares and motorcycles but also increased traffic in the shape of electric and LPG cars. These were granted access to the priority lanes simply to give some small advantage to encourage environmentally-friendly vehicles.

This can make bus lanes intimidating and congested for people on bicycles, more so when drivers bend the rules and use them illegally.
