Security issues and the recent spate of burglaries in Sliema were discussed at a meeting between the local council and the police.

The council said they agreed “on a number of recommendations” that would be implemented. It did not elaborate.

On Tuesday, Times of Malta reported that theft cases from Sliema houses this year almost equalled the number of break-ins for the whole of 2013. There were 29 reported burglaries from occupied dwellings in Sliema between January and June, contrasting with 33 cases throughout 2013.

The council yesterday urged residents to report directly to the police on 2122 4001 any suspicious activity in as much detail as possible.

A police spokesman said proactive action was being taken through more patrols, particularly over the weekend, by the Rapid Intervention Unit, the Criminal Investigation Department and district police.

The police are also investigating reports of symbols scratched on house intercoms, which Sliema residents feared were coded signals to burglars.
