I am truly delighted that the Prime Minister is spearheading a campaign to reduce the level of totally unnecessary bureaucracy in Malta (April 29).

I have recently retired here following a career spent abroad and the level of bureaucracy being faced is really unbelievable; getting an ID Card for my Polish wife and registering our cars in Malta were almost herculean tasks. The officials involved were very helpful and extremely polite but they have to “follow the rules”.

The latest hurdle I’ve encountered is to put myself back on the electoral register; I would have thought that a Maltese passport and ID card would be enough proof of my entitlement, but no!

Officialdom demands that I also present my British passport, my letter from the ministry confirming that I never lost my Maltese citizenship, my birth certificate and my father’s birth certificate. I presented all these ages ago when I reapplied for my Maltese passport, so why on earth do I need to present them all over again? Is not all this information already held on the system?
