The Bulgarian parents of a 17-year-old, who on Sunday admitted to cultivating cannabis, joined him in prison yesterday after they too admitted to helping him grow the plants.

His 40-year-old father and 37-year-old adoptive mother received three years in jail after pleading guilty. Their crime was aggravated by the fact they helped a minor to cultivate cannabis over the last eight months.

The 17-year-old, who is not being named because he is a minor, had been sent to jail for 18 months and fined €500. In court yesterday, Police Inspector Jesmond Borg said the parents had cooperated fully with the police and admitted to their involvement immediately.

He said they would help the young man look after some five plants which were growing with the help of a large lamp.

Magistrate Miriam Hayman warned the couple they would definitely be jailed once they admitted to the charges. They confirmed their guilty plea and were jailed for three years and fined €1,000 each.
