The European Commission is considering measures aimed at curbing the availability of psychoactive substances used as “legal” drugs, which are easily bought over the internet.

These new, mostly synthetic, drugs appeared only recently on the market and have still not come under a ban. Their use has already led to severe and even fatal consequences, according to the Commission.

A recent Eurobarometer survey found that five per cent of young Europeans have already tried such drugs, although Malta is on the lower end of the scale with only 0.3 per cent of 15- to 24 year-olds admitting to using these drugs.
