The European Commission closed infringement proceedings against Malta over the issue of the differentiated tariff structure for bus transport in Malta, the government said.

The tariffs discriminated between the maximum fares applicable to residents of Malta and the fares payable by non-residents.

The move by Brussels followed a decision by the government to introduce a single bus fare from January 6.

The government welcomed the Commission’s decision to close the infringement proceedings and noted the increase in the use of public transport usage since the removal of the two-tier system.
