Floriana are on the verge of agreeing terms with Iain Brunskill to take up their vacant coaching post.

Brunskill, whose last job was as first-team coach at Championship club Blackburn Rovers, has been identified by top Floriana officials as their preferred candidate to succeed Stephen Azzopardi who left by mutual agreement last week.

Sources have told The Times that Brunskill could be presented to the media today following productive talks yesterday.

Apart from his spell with Blackburn, where he worked alongside the likes of Sam Allardyce, Steve Kean and Henning Berg, Brunskill was also a key member of the coaching staff at the Liverpool FC Academy.

Brunskill’s appointment would represent a significant coup for the struggling Greens who have had an inconsistent season so far.

Apart from the coaching changes – Mark Wright had a brief spell in charge at the start of the season – the Greens have offloaded several players in the last few months but this week they’ve taken steps to strengthen their squad.

After bringing in Brazilian striker Rodrigo Branco and English midfielder Harry Agombar from Macclesfield Town, Floriana yesterday confirmed that Udo Nwoko, formerly of Hibernians, has joined them until the end of the season.

Floriana are also interested in signing Hibs winger Steve Pisani on loan until the end of season.

With the transfer window closing this evening, some clubs are ex-pected to make last-ditch attempts to strengthen their squads.

Ħamrun Spartans are hopeful of beating the deadline to register Italian midfielder Giacomo Favero.

The Spartans are also in talks with Spaniard Cesar Catalan.

Balzan are still waiting for the international transfer certificate of Elie Moises Akui N’dekre, a striker from Ivory Coast who last played in Spain.

Balzan received some good news about Elton’s condition after medical checks showed that the Brazilian’s knee injury is not as serious as first thought.

Top-six hopefuls Sliema Wanderers are keen to sign Nigerian Stanley Nka Ohawuchi but the transfer is on hold until the necessary documentation arrives.

The 22-year-old striker was on the books of Spanish club CD Atlético Baleares.
