Malta is not the same safe island it once was. Crime is growing and the worrying thing is that, increasingly, punishment does not fit the crime. Mind you, when I say crime I don’t mean the occasional robberies that we used to read about 10-15 years ago. I am talking about innocent people being murdered or raped by some excuse of a man who finds himself a good lawyer or pleads “mentally instability” and somehow manages to fool Maltese justice. Gone are those days where Maltese children used to be able to go out and play in the streets in the knowledge that they are safe.

If your concern is that Malta cannot allow the death penalty because it is unchristian, then just think for a second: do those who commit such heinous crimes really deserve a second chance?

I’m not implying that we should put everyone on death row but, at least, harsher punishments must be given, unless we want our justice system to turn into a laughing stock.
