I have been enormously disturbed and shocked by the government’s thought of resuscitation of a bridge link to Gozo now entrusted to Chinese hands.

The point at issue is not the technical construction of the bridge itself which surely can be realised using Comino as an intermediate support, but the obscene consequences of ruining the wonderful panorama seascapes and burying them forever.

Should government insist on a permanent Gozo link, surely, the better solution to avoid the havoc and obliteration of the marvellous visual environment would be an undersea tunnel link which is also surely technically possible keeping in view the infinitely longer and more extensive undersea link successfully completed between France and the UK.

However, the government should consider not just the visual damage to the sea and territorial landscapes but also the resultant and even more catastrophic consequences of inflicting perpetual damage to the uniquely superb land environment that makes Gozo such an exceptional jewel.

It is precisely the rare, quiet and peaceful environment that makes Gozo unique and increasingly rare and that ultimately attracts visitors to its shores and prospective settlers to purchase property there.

Any physical link between the islands is surely bound to increase dramatically vehicular traffic congestion on Gozo’s road network which was never intended to take this load of traffic.

Gozo is truly well served by the excellent and frequent ferry link plying between Cirkewwa and Mgarr with the added tremendous advantage of taking in and enjoying the magnificent sea and landscapes on the way including especially Comino’s cave-riddled sea boundaries.

It is most surely and mainly the responsibility of the Gozitans to stand up smartly and resist with all their might the permanent mortal disaster that would overtake their beloved birthplace with any kind of permanent, physical link.

Leave Gozo alone as the Lord has created it.
