Maria Arpa wants to hold her wedding in the same spot during the scheduled film shoot in October.Maria Arpa wants to hold her wedding in the same spot during the scheduled film shoot in October.

Maria Arpa would like to have a “woman to woman” talk with Angelina Jolie in the hope she can still have her “dream wedding” at Mġarr ix-Xini in October where the superstar will be filming.

“I don’t even know the dates when they’ll be filming. I just want to have a woman-to-woman conversation with Angelina Jolie.

“It’s just so difficult to actually get through to them.

“I don’t want to disrupt anything. But it would be lovely if they allow us and our 50 guests to have a wedding party at Mġarr ix-Xini,” Ms Arpa said.

The 53-year-old told Times of Malta that “massive costs were involved” because her 50 guests, including relatives and friends from the USA and the UK as well as her 85-year-old Maltese mother who lives in London, had all booked and paid for their flights and accommodation.

“I’m not angry, annoyed or frustrated. It’s just a blip,” she said.

I spoke to her publicist but had barely put in four sentences before he hung up on me

“Of course Gozo should benefit from such a lucrative deal. This is just one little consequence that no one thought of and all I’m asking is: can you help me please?”

She plans to marry her partner of seven years, 51-year-old David Ellis, on October 4.

When she learnt that the Hollywood superstar would be filming on the same Gozo beach where she wanted to hold her wedding ceremony, Ms Arpa took to Facebook in the hope that her fervent plea would reach the benevolent ears of Ms Jolie and her partner, Brad Pitt.

Ms Arpa said she managed to get through to Mr Pitt’s publicist.

However, she was informed that he was only taking part as an actor in the film and that she needed to take the issue up with Rich Klubeck at United Talent Agency, Angelina Jolie’s publicist.

“I spoke to Klubeck’s assistant but I had barely put in four sentences before he hung up on me.

“I tried phoning again but I only reached the voicemail,” she said.

On Facebook, she wrote that the wedding had been planned at the beginning of the year: “At that time, the local council told us it would be OK, so we made plans and have guests coming from overseas.

“Then, a few days ago, the local council announced to our caterer that the area would be closed and we can no longer have our wedding party there.

“We have been given three months’ notice.”

It was pointed out to Ms Arpa that to have her wedding reception at Mġarr ix-Xini she would need a “no objection” letter from the local council and a permit from the Land Department.

She said planning was in the hands of a local caterer who informed her the wedding was given the go ahead by the council in April following a meeting.

“We thought that once the local council had given us the go ahead, it would be an easy process to obtain the permit. But when the caterer went to apply recently, there was a refusal.”

Sannat mayor Philip Vella said the local council had never issued a “no objection” letter or permit for an activity on October 4.

Ms Arpa is open to suggestions as to alternative wedding venues but not having it in Mġarr ix-Xini meant she would not have her “dream wedding”.

Mġarr ix-Xini, she continued, was a special place for the couple.

“I’ve always dreamt I would retire in Gozo. The first time David came to Gozo, he wasn’t too keen on living here as it was a strange place to him, in comparison to where he came from.

“But when he walked to Mġarr ix-Xini and soaked in the surroundings, he told me: ‘That’s it. I would definitely live here.’”

The couple run the Centre for Peaceful Solutions, a charity that offers mediation and mediation training for civil, commercial, workplace, family and community disputes.

Ms Arpa was born in England to Maltese parents and considers herself to be Maltese. She owns a house in Munxar and has a number of Maltese relatives.

Film Commissioner Engelbert Grech said his office contacted all parties to establish the facts.

“We established that no government entity had ever issued a permit for Ms Arpa to have her wedding at Mġarr ix-Xini.

“The film production company followed proper procedure and got all the required permits to use the location. The Film Commission is dealing with many requests from people who would like to meet these high-profile actors, however, we need to respect their privacy and give them the space they need to produce their film.”
