A breakwater across the mouth of Marsamxett harbour should be properly studied before any work is carried out, according to Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar.
The environmental group said wave motion studies must be held to assess how changes in currents and waves would affect water stagnation, impact the seabed and cause shoreline erosion in different areas of the harbour.
The possibility of building a breakwater at Marsamxett with Chinese investment was mentioned during the Prime Minister’s visit to China last week.
A breakwater would make it possible to develop a yacht marina along the Sliema shoreline.
But FAA insisted that before the yacht marina project materialised serious studies were required.
“FAA is extremely concerned about the increased traffic that a marina will generate in this heavily congested and polluted area,” it stated.
