Birkirkara are on the verge of engaging the services of a Bosnian goalkeeper who was due to arrive in Malta yesterday.
Mirza Hamzabegovic has reached a verbal agreement to join the Stripes following discussions with coach Paul Zammit over the past few days.
The signing of a goalkeeper has been a top priority for Zammit since last summer not only to provide cover for first-choice Justin Haber but also to increase competition for the club’s no.1 shirt.
Zammit has already had the chance to assess the qualities of Hamzabegovic as the 24-year-old had a trial with Birkirkara during their pre-season training camp in France but his chances of earning a deal were hampered by a hamstring problem at the time.
It is understood that Birkirkara have remained in contact with Hamzabegovic’s agent with a view to reviving contract talks for the towering goalkeeper who has become available after ending his spell with Bosnian club NK Bratstvo.
Birkirkara are also hoping to conclude negotiations with Qormi over the transfer of Maurizio Mazzetti Latini.
The Argentine defender has already discussed personal terms with Birkirkara who have reportedly offered winger Leighton Grech to Qormi in a player-exchange deal.
Meanwhile, Mosta yesterday announced the signing of Nigerian forward Haruna Babangida. The 32-year-old played for Barcelona, Ajax and Mainz in the past.
