The opening round of competition from the 2017 Malta Drag Racing Association, held recently at the raceway in Ħal Far, produced some stunning results including a new national Super Street Bike (SSB) record by Simon Giordmaina’s team.

Giordmaina himself applied the latest tune-up to his turbo-charged Suzuki Hayabusa and, ridden by Franklyn Borg, the team continued where they had left off last year with an impressive weekend of scorching runs, culminating in the new national best time of 6.993 seconds.

The challenge became even more daunting for Giordmaina’s team after Shawn Buttigieg had gone beyond the previous best record of 7.091 seconds, registered last year, on two occasions last weekend.

On the opening day of the racing series, with the weather and track conditions very much suited for racing, Buttigieg rode his bike to impressive 7.08 and 7.07 timings in successive runs.

So, all was set for the decisive eliminations with most of the teams applying last-minute finishing touches to their bikes.

In the end, Giordmaina’s team took the honours as Borg and his bike became the first in the Super Street category to go below the seven-second mark – 6.993 which translated to an incredible speed measure of 208.95mph.

They also won both Open and SSB Class finals.

The official timing puts the Giordmaina Suzuki Hayabusa third in the list of active motorcycles registered in the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme SSB Class rules.

In a statement, Giordmaina’s team said Borg did a great job in riding the bike to top positions and a new record at the Ħal Far raceway.

They also showed their appreciation to all those who contributed to their success including Rodney Williford, MTC Engineering and NLR from the technical area.
