Alex Borg maintained his status as national champion after beating Duncan Bezzina 7-4 in last weekend’s final played at the De Rohan club in Żebbug.

The match was played in front of a sizeable crowd and under the control of referee Gaetano Camilleri. The success was Borg’s 11th in his career.

Bezzina took the first two frames, also hitting a break of 52 in the process, as the next two were shared with Borg winning the third only for Bezzina to hit another half-century break and make the score 3-1.

Borg, however, levelled at 3-3, winning the last two frames before the mid-session interval.

When play resumed Borg won the seventh frame 58-21 and added the next two, helped by breaks of 45 and 70, to go 6-3 up.

Bezzina pulled one back with a run of 48 in the 10th frame.

He was also leading 46-9 in the 11th when Juventutis Domus player Borg had a break of 37 to level the scores with only one red left on the table.

Bezzina conceded 30 points after failing to hit a difficult snooker and Borg clinched victory, winning the frame 91-46 for a defintive score of 7-4.
