Foreign Minister Tonio Borg yesterday briefed his EU counterparts on the latest developments in Libya following his meetings with the National Transitional Council in Benghazi over the weekend.

Addressing the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels – the first under the new Polish Presidency – Dr Borg said he was very impressed by the determination of the Libyan people fighting for liberty.

“The way forward to the current stalemate in Libya should first consist of a ceasefire, followed by the launching of a political process of transition which would simultaneously lead to the removal of the current regime,” Dr Borg said. Giving details of his one-day visit to Benghazi, Dr Borg said the participation of the young generation in their quest to shape their future was central to the revolution taking place in Libya.

EU ministers reiterated the need for Muammar Gaddafi to make way for change and their commitment to send a military mission to Libya to support humanitarian assistance if requested by the UN.

They also discussed Syria and expressed their concern about the regime’s ongoing repression of protestors, which has led to several deaths.

The Foreign Affairs Council also discussed the Middle East Peace Process, in view of the UN resolution on the recognition of a future Palestinian state.
