Malta champion Alex Borg and the country’s top woman player Roberta Cutajar will leave the islands today on their way to Latvia where they will represent Malta in the 2012 EBSA European Championships to be played bet-ween June 4 and 14.

In all, 152 players from 32 countries will compete in the championships which will be played on 16 tables at the Olympic Sport Centre in Daugavpils.

Eighty players will feature in the men’s tournament, 48 in the Masters and 24 will be vying for the women’s title.

The players in the men’s competition were divided into 16 groups of five players each with the top three in each section moving into the last 48 knock-out stages.

Borg has won the EBSA title in 2005 and 2006. He was also a finalist in 1998 and 2004.

In Latvia, he was drawn in Group C together with Sascha Lippe (Germany), Shay Arama (Israel), Vladislav Kalinovski (Belarus) and Janis Bindze (Latvia).

The women players were split into four groups of six players each with the top four making the last 16 stage.

Cutajar, who reached the semi-final on her first appearance in the championships last year in Bulgaria, is in Group B with Irina Gorbataya (Russia), Touzani Nawal (Belgium), Stephanie Teschner (Germany), Inese Lukashevska (Latvia) and Weronika Novicka (Poland).
