Mellieħa chalked up their second consecutive 1-0 victory after beating Għargħur thanks to Wayne Borg St John’s first-half goal.
This vital victory allowed the northerners to keep up the pace with Gudja United in second place with only two matches remaining.
With Gżira already crowned champions, Gudja and Mellieħa are engaged in a tight fight for the remaining promotion berth.
Mellieħa were the better team in the first half, opening the scoring after 14 minutes. Matthew Vella began the move, releasing Borg St John who fired past Dunstan Zarb from the edge of the box.
There was no reaction from Għargħur as Mellieħa continued to dictate matters, going close to doubling their lead on some occasions.
Kyle Simiana did well to serve William Borg but the Mellieħa player’s shot skimmed the upright.
Għargħur should have equalised just before half-time but Benjamin Perry Acton’s effort missed the Mellieħa goal by a whisker.
The second half saw Għargħur come more into the picture as both teams blocked each other in midfield. The match was rather scrappy at times and chances in front of goal rare.
On 56 minutes, Għargħur’s David Mamo surged into the opponents’ half only to see his shot brilliantly saved by goalkeeper James Abela.
Mellieħa then opted for caution and their quick breaks never worried goalkeeper Zarb.
Għargħur tried hard to salvage a point in the remaining minutes but Mellieħa held out to secure three priceless points.
