The run of Alex Borg and Brian Cini at the World Team Championships came to an end yesterday when they lost to China’s Chen Zifan and Yuan Sijun 4-2 in the quarter-finals at Sharm-el-Sheikh.

The 2016 European Team champions had started brightly as Cini compiled a run of 89 to beat Zifan 89-1 in the opener.

Sijun, 16, then gave a glimpse of his promise when defeating Borg 103-23. But the Maltese pair won the doubles 77-0.

Zifan compiled a break of 120 on his way to beating Borg before Sijun potted 56 to see off Cini 77-36. Malta trailed 2-3.

Zifan and Sijun, the eventual beaten finalists, wrapped up their win when securing the second doubles 60-13.
