The 10th Turkish Amateur Open will be played at the Antalya Golf Club between September 22 and 25.

The 18-hole PGA Sultan Championship Course, with challenging narrow fairways and 122 bunkers, measures a total of 6,411 metres and has a par of 71 for men and 72 for ladies.

Andy Borg and Chris Bergedahl, winner and runner-up of the 2011 Royal Malta Golf Club Championship, will be travelling together to this tournament, the Malta Golf Association (MGA) said in a statement.

While Borg’s participation has already been confirmed, Bergedahl will learn his fate on arrival at the tournament as his 1.4 handicap at the closing date of entries was not sufficient to secure him an automatic place among the 85 shortlisted players.

The strength of this amateur tournament is such that 82 of the 85 participants have a handicap of scratch or better. Bergedahl’s handicap has since dropped to 0.7 but the MGA is confident that, with some good fortune, he will actually get to play in the tournament.

The MGA welcomed the decision to stage the tournament on the Antalya course as it is endeavouring to send a team of three players to represent Malta for the first time in the WATC (Eisenhower Trophy) next year.

Having participated successively in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, this would be Malta’s fifth showing in the Turkish Open.

This year’s participation is being made possible largely due to the generous financial sponsorship from a number of RMGC members.
