The landlocked Principality of Liechtenstein, which borders Switzerland and Austria, has become the latest addition to the EU’s borderless area, known as Schengen.

Although not an EU member, the principality has agreed to implement all the EU rules related to passport-free travel. All visitors to the country – which is more than half Malta’s size but with less than a tenth of its population – will no longer need to show their passports at the border. Similarly, its 36,000 inhabitants can move freely in other Schengen member states.
