The ASMK Trials championship for season 2012-13 came to a close recently in a series-deciding event that had to be shifted from a Naxxar venue to the circuit in Ta’ Qali due to last-minute hitches.

Damon Bonello lived up to his billing as Class A favourite when he rode his way superbly past all obstacles on his Gas Gas to seal the championship in style.

On the day, he registered four clean sections from the six laid out along the route by the organisers.

Gary Debono, on his Sherco bike, and Nick Farrugia, on a Beta, were the runner-up and third-placed riders respectively. Bonello won the Pasta Poiatti-sponsored championship with 148 points ahead of Debono on 122.

Class B saw the participation of four riders – Rowen Bonello (Beta), Jonathan Camilleri (Gas Gas), Joseph Scicluna (Gas Gas) and Shaun Said (Gas Gas).

Bonello, Scicluna and Said opened an early advantage following two clean sections each.

However, Bonello soon seized sole leadership, with just 24 penalty points conceded to the 33 of Camilleri, 34 for Scicluna and Said’s 35.

Bonello claimed the Class B title with seven wins this season that earned him 157 championship points. Camilleri was second with 131.

Late last month, ASMK president Frans Deguara and secretary Johann Pace were present for the 2013 FIM-Europe Congress in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Malta was among 47 countries present for the three-day meeting which gives FIM members an opportunity to strengthen ties and discuss new initiatives.

In fact, during the congress, a meeting was also held for delegates from the Mediterranean basin only.

Representatives from Morocco, Greece, Spain, Egypt, Libya, Cyprus, Italy and Malta discussed various issues among which was a motocross championship for riders from the region.

Malta was invited to compete and also to organise one of the races in the new championship which should start in the near future.

Meanwhile, Deguara and Pace also found time to continue with their lobbying for ASMK Malta to host the 2015 FIM-Europe annual general conference.

They met FIM president Vito Ippolito and other high-ranking officials besides participating in workshops for Motocross, Trials, Enduro and Track Racing.
