2011 was an interesting and colourful year for local sailing as the clubs’ regattas and even a significant number of international events enhanced the home calendar.

One major appointment held recently was the National Championship, organised by the Malta Sailing Federation.

Presently, eight clubs and one association make up the federation and, as far as the nationals are concerned, the tradition is that each year a member club is selected to host this annual event.

Normally the championship is held in mid-autumn but due to persistent inclement weather the two-day event had to be rescheduled for a later date.

The 2011 nationals, sponsored by Argo Insurance Group, were organised by the Vikings Sailing Club and raced along the Sliema seafront.

Competitors were divided into four classes – optimist open, optimist cadet, novice class and laser 4.7 class.

In the laser standard there were only two entries, so this did not constitute a class.

At the end of competition, Ella Fleri Soler won the Joe Borg Costanzi Trophy and Thomas Bonello Ghio was declared national champion.

Clive Chipperfield attended the presentation of trophies on behalf of the sponsors.
