“When the stuff hits the fan, it will not be evenly distributed,” wrote a wise guy recently. He must have been watching Bondi+, at least last Thursday’s edition (November 1).

I was looking forward to a serious discussion about how our two main political parties reckon the forthcoming Budget ought to look like.

Instead of touching chiefly on economic and financial matters, it was all the usual political stuff hurled at us ignoramuses. The minister and the Opposition spokesman continually interrupted each other, with the presenter joining in for good measure. Sheer chaos. In the end some of the stuff did manage to hit the fan, but sadly the effect was lost on the viewers. It was the only sensible suggestion.

When arguing whether our national debt was €5 billion or €6 billion, or whether it was equivalent to 70 per cent or 90 per cent of GDP, the minister challenged the Labour spokesman: why don’t you make up your mind now to include government guarantees with the debt, and not play about with figures when in government?

That’s exactly what should be done, and equally in the interest of the Opposition, let alone the citizenry. Unfortunately, the presenter didn’t help by joining in the ensuing rumpus. I had to turn off the TV and vow never again to listen to political debates.

The BBC ones suffice.
