Birkirkara Smart Office Supplies came back from 2-0 down to hand Paola BC their first defeat of the season in the much-awaited clash between the two strong contenders.

Everyone expected a tough match for the reigning champions as Paola BC were on a high after a brilliant start to their campaign, having won both their initial matches.

But very few expected such a bright start from the Paolites as they claimed the opening matches to put Birkirkara under tremendous pressure.

Paola bagged their first point in the mixed doubles. After a disappointing start had cost them the first set, Joanne Cassar/Henrik Thomsen settled down and outplayed Marica Micallef/Stephen Ferrante, winning the remaining sets.

Kenneth Vella raised Paola’s hopes of upsetting their rivals as he put his team 2-0 up by winning the men’s singles at the expense of Samuel Cali.

At this point, the Paolites only needed to win one of the remaining three games to take home the honours. But Fiorella Sadowski re-opened the match as she defeated Jacqueline Grech Licari in three sets.

Ferrante/Cali then made amends for their defeats in the opening matches, winning the men’s doubles over Thomsen/ Owen Grech. With the score 2-2, the women’s doubles was to decide the issue.

Sadowski/Micallef sealed Birkirkara’s comeback with a solid performance. The Birkir-kara pair were too strong for Cassar/Grech Licari, with the latter’s efforts proving futile.
