Birkirkara are expected to offer a contract to Aleksandar Canovic after the Serbian goalkeeper left a good impression during his trial with the club, sources told The Sunday Times yesterday.

Canovic, 28, reported for his first training session with Birkirkara last week as coach Paul Zammit stepped up his efforts to acquire a goalkeeper to provide competition for Jorge Mora.

The Spaniard, who helped Birkirkara win the Premier League title in 2009/10, started the season as the team’s first-choice goalkeeper but after returning to the helm of the Stripes last month, Zammit identified the need to increase his goalkeeping options.

Birkirkara have reportedly received the go-ahead from Zammit to open contract talks with Canovic who last season played for Ermis Aradippou in Cyprus.

Canovic, who came through the youth ranks of Red Star Belgrade, was part of the Serbia and Montenegro squad at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

It remains to be seen whether Birkirkara will complete Canovic’s signing ahead of their BOV Premier League clash with Floriana tomorrow at the Tedesco Stadium.

Birkirkara are fifth in the table, level on 13 points with Sliema Wanderers who have played a game more.
