A Kazakh woman who drunkenly danced during the Stella Maris religious procession in a black bikini on Saturday evening was conditionally discharged for two years.

Christina Betke, 28, appeared before Magistrate Aaron Bugeja yesterday and was charged with impeding or disturbing a service of the Roman Catholic religion when the procession reached the Sliema Ferries on Saturday at about 10pm.

She refused to be represented by a lawyer and the magistrate explained to her in simple terms what the charges against her actually meant. But she still insisted she did not want legal counsel and pleaded guilty.

“I’m very sorry for what happened yesterday. I was very drunk and I will make sure it won’t happen again,” she said.

Police Inspector Jason Sultana, prosecuting, said they had received a report that a woman wearing a bikini was dancing in public.

She had just disembarked from a boat party a little sauced when she spotted the procession. At that point, she joined the celebrations and started dancing around the band members.

The officer said Ms Betke cooperated with the police and did not cause any harm to anyone. She also pleaded guilty to breaching the peace, being in a drunken state beyond control in public and being indecently dressed.

The inspector suggested a conditional discharge as the accused had apologised. Apart from the conditional discharge, Magistrate Bugeja also fined Ms Betke €150.
