New major roads are in the pipeline and due to start being rebuilt soon. Bike lanes are a must on many of these roads and there is also ample space for decent ones to be built. I hope we won’t end up with something like what we already have in Mġarr and Ħal Far, that is, bike lanes that are useless for bikes.
Bike lanes built on new roads should be up to standard. They should be paved with tarmac not cobblestones and they should be level with the road not on the pavement. They should also follow the course of the traffic on the main road and not be interrupted every time the pavement ends. Last but certainly not least, there should be no poles in the middle of the bike lane. It is customary in other developed countries for these to be put on the side, not right in the middle.
