A new sports scholarship scheme worth €120,000 will seek to encourage more young people to think of sports as a profession rather than a hobby, the Parliamentary Secretary for Sport, Clyde Puli, said.

The scholarships are aimed at promising athletes who wish to receive professional training in their sports discipline and at students pursuing sports-related qualifications in anything from sport psychology to sport law at top educational institutions.

Mr Puli hoped that the scholarships and other sports-related government initiatives would eventually lead to a broader pool of domestic athletic talent and more highly-qualified sports personnel.

Those interested in applying can visit www.sportmalta.org.mt. The applications close on April 30.
