Public consultations over the introduction of competition into the postal service next year are set to be held next month.

Two documents covering different challenges to the service have been drafted.

The Malta Communication Authority hopes this will result in more choice for consumers, offering them a better deal as operators must improve operational efficiency and quality.

The first consulation focuses on how competition can be effectively regulated in the new, liberalised system. The closing date is September 18.

The second addresses the issue of reviewing licence authorisation and related principles for administration charges. This closes on September 24.

MCA executive chairman Philip Micallef said: “From a regulatory perspective, these are hectic and exciting times and we look forward to managing this new state of affairs, fully awar e of the complexities it presents.”
