I am unsure as to why Karl Consiglio (December 3) criticises Ivan Padovani’s comments about abortion availability. Abortion is illegal in Malta, and for perfectly good reasons.
The fact that it is available abroad is irrelevant to the law as it exists in Malta; introducing abortion legislation just to “bring us in line” with other European countries would be wrong on the basis of the “two wrongs don’t make a right” principle.
Similarly, legislating on such an important issue for purely pragmatic reasons (“it’s available 60 miles away anyway, so we might as well provide it locally”) would be a terrible betrayal of principle.
